POSITION: FAITH ENGAGEMENT OFFICER
PEMA Kenya is an LGBTI community based organization based in the coastal town of Mombasa – Kenya. The mission of PEMA Kenya is to champion the inclusion of Gender and Sexual Minorities (GSM) by providing space for advocacy, networking and capacity building of GSM and the general society with the needed tools and information.
Since 2010, PEMA Kenya has been working with religious leaders by taking them through the values of empathy, understanding and greater tolerance towards marginalized members of the society. This training program was formally developed in 2011 but has been revised over the years. Over 500 religious leaders have been trained to-date.
While the goal of the training has been to educate religious leaders on HIV, stigma and discrimination, and gender and sexual diversity, PEMA Kenya is looking at revamping this training program to ensure that it responds to the needs expressed by the membership and the training participants. For that reason, PEMA Kenya seeks to hire a program officer to lead in the process of deepening the capacity of religious leaders to engage with and support gender and sexual minorities in their communities as well as advocate for the rights of gender and sexual minorities within their sphere of influence.
2 Scope of Work
The Religious Leaders & spiritual guidance coordinator is expected to support the realization of two main objectives.
1. Engage religious leaders with a view to strengthening their capacity to work with and support realization of the rights of, and spiritual aspirations of Gender and sexual minorities of faith. This should be done in a dialogic way that reflects the inter-faith and ecumenical nature of the faith leadership in Kenya generally and coastal region in particular.
2. Support PEMA Kenya membership realize and actualize their spiritual needs and aspirations.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
❖ Conduct religious needs assessments with PEMA Kenya members and partnering LGBTI organizations in Mombasa
❖ Plan, convene and coordinate PEMA Kenya religious leaders trainings
❖ Aggregate and disseminating religious resources and educational materials to PEMA Kenya members and partnering organizations
❖ Act as a spiritual needs capacity builder/contact person for PEMA Kenya members
❖ In partnership with PEMA Kenya leadership, design and implement religious leaders engage work and membership spiritual needs enhancement activities such as workshops, meetings or prayer meetings as may be necessary
❖ Maintain, renew and improve PEMA Kenya’s faith leaders’ engagement strategy
❖ Advise PEMA Kenya leadership on the religious leaders engagement work
❖ Receive and follow up monthly activity reports from the religious leader
❖ Documentation and reporting on religious leaders programming activities in partnership with other PEMA Kenya program leaders
❖ Any other activities as delegated by the PEMA Kenya director
The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of the next phase of PEMA Kenya religious leaders & membership spiritual needs work.
She/He/They will be expected to have:
❖ Experience working with religious leaders from different faiths particularly Christian and Islamic faith leaders
❖ Demonstrable capacity in the use of positive faith language in outreach to religious leaders
❖ Deep understanding of different administrative and non-administrative systems of accessing and working with faith leaders from different religions and denominations
❖ Strong training skills especially for adult learners
❖ Strategic faith thinking as demonstrated in ability to plan and implement faith interventions in the short and medium term but with an eye for long term impact
❖ Strong speaking and written communication skills
❖ Strong experience in engaging in faith-based organizing and/or spiritual communities
❖ Relevant educational certification in a relevant discipline (e.g. theology, anthropology or other social sciences)
❖ Working knowledge of formal human rights mechanisms
❖ Experience working with the Sexual and Gender Minorities (LGBTQ)
❖ Demonstrable leadership skills
❖ Strong team player
